Using short-rotation, intensively managed hardwood plantations as ‘green’ inventory for southeastern U.S. pulp mills

چکیده
As a routine wood source for a pulp mill, recent studies have shown that intensively managed, short-rotation hardwood plantations are not cost effective. The objective of this study was to determine if these plantations may be cost effective as “green” inventory, replacing some portion of high cost remote woodyard inventory. Three southeastern U.S. pulp mills were used as case studies in a net present value analysis. Short-rotation hardwood plantations of eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) were simulated to replace a portion of remote woodyard inventory, with wood delivered to a pulp mill from this “green” inventory only when pulp mill inventory levels became critical. If this “green” inventory is not used, these plantations continue to grow until needed. With current yield from an experimental fiber farm, short-rotation plantations were not cost effective as “green” inventory. However, if yield could be increased approximately 33% through either genetic or cultural improvements, all three pulp mills could have reduced overall wood cost by establishing a fiber farm. Application: This study demonstrates some of the potential benefits and limitations of short-rotation hardwood plantations as a fiber source.

متن کاملAn economic analysis of hardwood fiber production on dryland irrigated sites in the US Southeast
Although there is renewed interest in intensively managed, short-rotation plantations as a source of hardwood for pulp mills, few have been established in the Southeast. Understanding all the costs associated with these plantations will help determine their feasibility. Using a model developed to summarize all the costs, a break-even analysis was completed to determine the delivered cost for pl...
متن کاملIntegrating Wildlife Conservation with Commercial Silviculture — Demography of the Swainson’s Warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii), a Migrant Bird of Conservation Concern in Southern Pine Forests, USA
Intensively managed pine (Pinus spp.) forests encompass over 15.8 million hectares in the southeastern United States and provide an important source of wood products and an economic return to landowners. Given the extent of this landscape and the diversity of management goals and stakeholders, understanding how these forests can also be managed for biological diversity is important. Swainson’s ...
متن کاملDeployment of Tree Resistance to insects in Short Rotation Biomass Plantations
Short rotation woody crop (SRWC) plantations use fast-growing tree species (such as Populus and Salix) grown under intensively managed conditions much like traditional agricultural crops (Dickmann and Stuart 1983). Typical rotation age ranges from 3-15 years, with the end products including energy and paper (pulp) products. Operational biomass plantations currently use a limited number of clone...
متن کاملCompilation of State-of-the-Art Mechanization Technologies for Short-Rotation Woody Crop Production
SUMMARY This report reviews the current state of mechanization of operations, from establishment through harvesting and transportation, for short-rotation hardwood plantations. Given that essentially all of the high production plantations in the U.S. are intended for pulp production, with residues for energy as a secondary product, the report focuses mainly on approaches for producing trees gre...
